The North Elm Cemetery is located in Milam County in the heart of central Texas, seven miles northwest of Cameron and thirty miles south of Waco. The Cemetery is situated on County Road 145, one mile south of Farm to Market Road 485. Across County Road 145 from the cemetery in years past there was the North Elm Church, the parsonage for its minister, and the three room North Elm school house. Only the cemetery remains today as a link to the past and the history of the North Elm Cemetery reaches out to its descendants in the immediate area, the state of Texas, and across the United States. Early pioneers of the North Elm community believed the John George Lagrone family donated the first land for the Cemetery around the time of Mr. Lagrone’s death, June 5, 1870. His was the first grave in the Cemetery. Early county records do not reflect any land deeded to the Cemetery until December 5, 1883, when B. I. Arnold deeded 6 acres from the Jose Antonio DePena League. In 1886, W. J. Valentine deeded 7 acres from the Francisco Antonio De Los Rios Survey, and in 1912, J. C. Mayfield deeded 7/10 of an acre. On March 24, 2000, the Texas Historical Commission officially listed the North Elm Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery, worthy of preservation due to its historical significance and age. A medallion and marker were placed within the Cemetery grounds in the Fall 2001. |
